History of the Fleur De Lis
While the fleur-de-lis has appeared on countless European Coats of Arms and flags over the centuries, it is particularly associated with the French monarchy on a historical context. More recently, it can be associated with the Spanish monarchy and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg as the only remaining monarchs of the House of Bourbon.
The Fleur De Lis is an enduring symbol of France that appears on French postage stamps but has not been adopted officially by any of the French Republics. In contrast, the fleur-de-lis is associated with the Spanish King Juan Carlos I (of Bourbon descent) and the Kingdom of Spain. In North America, especially in the United States, the Fleur De Lis symbol is often associated with areas formerly settled by France such as Louisiana. The Fleur De Lis symbol crossed the Atlantic with Europeans going to the New World. The Fleur De Lis symbol is on many North American flags and coats of arms usually recalls the involvement of French settlers in the history of the town or region concerned, and in some cases the persisting presence there of a population descended from such settlers.
Using the Fleur De Lis in Design
The Fleur De Lis has been used extensively in wrought iron, bronze and brass elements including fencing, door push plates, door handles and knobs. The symbol may be used upside down or right side up. Typically in fencing, the sharper tip is pointed upward as a design tactic to keep unwanted visitors out – but inside a building the Fleur De Lis symbol can be used with the tip pointed in either direction.
Using this symbol throughout a home can help tie in several design elements together and provide a level of harmony and consistency to any decor. Fleur de lis elements can start at the front door as a door knocker, and a Fleur De Lis entryway set. By using the Fleur De Lis consistently on the front door – it will provide visual markers and cues that will be seen throughout the home – allowing visitors to perceive a consistent (and beautiful) design theme.
Inside the home, swing doors can utilize push and pull plates with the Fleur De Lis theme. Furthermore, furniture and kitchen cabinets can continue this theme in brass, bronze, nickel or most any finish desired.
Smaller design elements can also be used to tie together the theme – such as bookends, candles, wall plaques and such.
Fleur De Lis elements are readily available online as well as in many home decorating catalogs. Search for solid brass or bronze construction and be sure to ask questions. When you work with the Fleur De Lis symbol, you can rest assured that the different shapes and combinations will work to tie themselves together nicely.
