Customize Your Home: Installing Cabinet Hardware
There are many ways to go about making your house a home, and one of them is in various forms of remodeling. Starting with a relatively easy task, here are the steps to installing your own, custom cabinet hardware.
To begin, you must choose one of the many different types of customized hardware. You can look online or check out your local hardware and home improvement store for ideas.
Next, you simply have to find the correct size drill bit. You want one that matches the thread hole on the handle. You can try a few different sizes, but your best bet is the one that fits most tightly to the hardware.
Now you have to figure out exactly where you want the handles to be installed. For drawers, you should put them in the middle. For cabinet doors, it is more important to have them in a convenient place for you. Many people place handles in the bottom corner, while others are able to put them in the middle of the inside edge. And for cabinets on the floor, you can put them on the top inside corner so you do not have to bend over to open them. Just be certain where you want them before you begin to drill.
Mark exactly where you want your handles. It is best to use a pencil, and it is always a good idea to have a level on hand. If you are installing longer drawer handles with two screws, you will need to use the level. Otherwise, your handle will be crooked. For cabinets, you can use the level when making sure the two different handles are at equal levels on their respective doors.
Pre-drill the holes at the marked locations. You need shallow holes, so make sure you do not drill all the way through.
Simply line up the hardware with the holes and begins screwing in the handles. You can use a power screwdriver or a simple tool, depending on your preference. When the screws are fully tightened, there should not be any space between the hardware and the cabinets.
One of the coolest things about installing your own cabinet hardware, and other do it yourself home improvements is that you can customize everything. From the shape and color of a cabinet handle, to the size and style of fine brass tiebacks, you can really make your house a home.
